  • "Knowledge in Development Notes" provide brief summaries of the state of knowledge on important areas of development," says L. Alan Winters, Director of the Development Research Group of the Development Economics Vice Presidency. Originally developed as briefing notes for incoming Bank president, Paul Wolfowitz, these "deep background" notes introduce the reader to key recent research findings from both inside and outside the Bank.

    Conflict

    Conflict studies the economics of civil war and post-conflict transitions to advise policymakers on avoiding conflict and conflict recurrence as well as improve the prospects of post-conflict development.

    Finance Research

    Finance Research helps developing countries and the World Bank formulate better policies in the area of domestic financial system development.

    Human Development & Public Services

    Human Development & Public Services  examines factors that contribute to human development, especially in the areas of health, education and social protection, how to improve the coverage and quality of services and broader institutions in support of human development, and the effective use of aid.

    Infrastructure & Environment

    Environment and Energy Research helps developing countries and the World Bank formulate better policies in the areas of energy and environment.


    International Migration & Development   includes extensive data-gathering and analysis on the development impact of migration, so as to identify migration policies, regulations and institutional reforms that will lead to improved development outcomes.

    Investment Climate

    Investment Climate Research collects and makes available to researchers high quality firm-level data.

    LSMS

    Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) makes available to researchers the data sets and methodological lessons from the LSMS household surveys, an important tool in measuring and understanding poverty in developing countries.

    Macroeconomics & Growth

    Macroeconomics & Growth  focuses on issues related to economic growth, short-run economic fluctuations, and a broad range of topics in international finance.

    Poverty

    Poverty Research aims to improve current data and methods of poverty and inequality analysis, make data more accessible to users, and use it to better understand what makes “pro-poor growth".

    Rural Development

    Agriculture and Rural Development focuses on three broad questions: (1) what are the most effective ways to raise productivity? (2) how might public goods be best supplied and external effects dealt with? and (3) how can poverty, volatility and vulnerability best be addressed?

    Trade

    Trade Research focuses on recent and ongoing research on international trade in the World Bank.
