The sweeping changes brought about by transition in the countries of Europe and Central Asia have greatly affected the economies of these countries and the living standards of their populations.
However, the manner in which this process has affected gender equality has not been fully explored. If the burden of transition on the people of the region is to be eased, it is necessary to understand how these changes have affected women, men and gender relations over the past decade.
The World Bank study “Gender in Transition”, by Pierella Paci, seeks to identify growing trends in gender differences in the countries of the region.
It pinpoints areas of concern with a view to raising awareness of the gender implications of the recent changes, and placing gender on the map of policy making in the region.
The following slides present a brief summary of the study's main findings.
