July, 2003- New Publication “Irrigation in Central Asia” : The Central Asian countries in the Aral Sea Basin - Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan- have some of the largest irrigation schemes in the world. Some 22 million people depend directly or indirectly on irrigated agriculture in these countries. Yet in the absence of maintenance, much of the infrastructure is fast approaching collapse. Although there is need to maintain the most critical infrastructure, there is disagreement regarding the scale, nature, timing and criteria for selecting these investments. The new World Bank study aims to help the governments in Central Asia weigh these arguments in making investment decisions until more detailed information becomes available... more

Feb 27, 2003: World Bank Discusses New Country Assistance Strategy (CAS) for Tajikistan: The program envisages support of up to US$80 million over the next three years. The new CAS is largely based upon, and supportive of, the Poverty Reduction Strategy Program (PRSP) developed by the Government through a highly participatory process and adopted by Parliament in June 2002.

July 3, 2002: World Bank and Tajikistan Sign Credit Agreements for Three IDA Projects: The Second Poverty Alleviation Project (SDR 11.1 million), the Dushanbe Water Supply Project (SDR 13.5 million) and Pamir Private Power Project (SDR 7.9 million).
The credits are the first lending operations to support the Government’s PRSP (Poverty Reduction Strategy) which was endorsed by the Parliament at the end of June 2002. The design of the credits reflects the priorities emphasized in the PRSP reform program.
